Hello I'm Adam Hart-Davis.

I am a freelance writer and photographer, and I do some broadcasting on radio and television. I like working from home, often with a cat helping on my desk, while I look out over the garden, hoping for inspiration. When I have to travel I like to do it by bike and train. To find out more about me and what I do, use the links above.

New On TV - History of the World in 100 Objects.

I have filmed two programmes for this new BBC 1 Series. They will both be shown on Monday 17 June 2010 at 7.30pm on BBC 1.

The Age of Steam: The story of Thomas Newcomen will be shown in the South West Region, and The Clock that Changed the World will be shown in Yorhshire and Lincolnshire.

Charity Link

I have just agreed to be Honorary Patron to a group of students from Cambridge who are planning to cycle from "Cambridge to Casablanca". Read about their challenge and sponsor them to raise money for The Sick Children's Trust. I am rather hoping that on their way they will find a very nice green and white jumper which I lost there in 1966.

My New Books

I have just finished my latest book "Science" published by Dorling Kindersley in September 2009. Read a review of the book which is described as "a brilliant introduction to science ..... with explanations that don't leave you reeling".

I also acted as editorial consultant for this book's companion "History", a vast history book also published by Dorling Kindersley. Full details can be found on my Books page. There's also a review from The Times and an article I've written regarding the book in Local History Magazine.

See my Books Page for lots more .

My latest television series - How Britain was Built - was broadcast on the History Channel from 26 January 2009. This covered four cities - Edinburgh, Liverpool, Bristol, and Newcastle, and looked at some of the extraordinary buildings and other artefacts, plus of course the stories behind them - some more believable than others. Near Edinburgh I painted the Forth Bridge; in Liverpool I rang the heaviest hanging bell in the world; in Bristol I found out how America got its name; and in Newcastle I rode on not only a tank but also Locomotion, a replica of one of George Stephenson's engines.

In October 2008 I presented a programme about Dr Beeching and the railways, which was broadcast on BBC North.

The Cosmos - A Beginner's Guide, was published in 2007 and the BBC2 series of the same name ran for six weeks from Tuesday 7th August. See my TV and Books pages for more details.

My series How London was built was shown on ITV London in 2006 and repeated on the History Channel. See my TV page for further details.

I write frequent articles for newspapers and magazines; many are printed on my Articles page and also fronted the HMRC 'Tax doesn't have to be taxing campaign'. I was fired by HMRC in January 2008, and my place was taken by the much sexier Moira Stuart.
